How to Convert a Spreadsheet File to UTF8
In some situations it’s necessary to convert a .CSV Spreadsheet file to UTF‐8 encoding before you can upload the file to VerticalResponse. If you run into this issue, here are simple methods for doing the conversion using Excel for Windows, Open Office for both Windows and Mac OS X, and Numbers for Mac OS X:
In Excel 2007 for Windows:
- Go to File > Save As. This will bring up the “Save As…” dialog box.
- Click the “Tools” button. You’ll find this in the lower left hand corner of the box.
- Select “Web Options”
- This will bring up another box with a series of tabs. Select the “Encoding” tab and then use the drop down menu to change the encoding to UTF‐8.
- Click OK and then save the document as a CSV file.
In Excel 2003-2006 for Windows:Follow the same steps as above, just note that the “Tools” button is located in the
top right of the “Save As” box as opposed to the bottom left as in Excel ’07.
In Open Office for Windows and Max OS X:
- Go to File > Save As. This will bring up the “Save As…” dialog box.
- Choose to save the file as CSV.
- You should see that the “Edit Filter Setting” checkbox is now accessible.
- Check this box.
- After you click “Save” a dialog box will appear asking you which character set to use. Select UTF‐8.
In Numbers for Mac OS X:
- Go to File > Export. This will bring up the “Export” dialog box.
- Choose the CSV tab.
- Use the “Text Encoding” drop down menu to select UTF‐8.
- Click Next and then choose where you want to save the file.
